Eight-year-old Finley Manser-Grundy made an impressive start to his cyclo-cross season at the opening round of the Wessex League, in Reading, competing in the highly competitive under-10 category.

Racing on a dry and well-prepared course featuring plenty of technical twists and turns, with a challenging climb on every lap, Finley faced an additional challenge before the race had even begun. With no previous league results, he was ungridded, and had to start from the back of the 41-rider field.

Undeterred, Finley made a strong start and spent the 10-minute race steadily working his way through the pack. Pacing his effort well, he climbed into fifth position with around four minutes remaining and held his place all the way to the finish.

Although the leading riders had established a gap at the front early in the race, Finley was delighted with his performance, and enjoyed every minute of the event.
