A crowd of excited youngsters and local residents gathered at noon yesterday (Thursday) for the official opening of the new East Cowes Skatepark.
The long-awaited project, led by East Cowes Town Council, has transformed a disused area into a purpose-built facility for BMX riders, skateboarders and scooter users.
Pupils from Queensgate Foundation Primary joined the celebrations, watching demonstrations from experienced riders and trying out the new ramps and rails for themselves.
The ribbon was cut by the Mayor, Cllr Tracy Reardon, who praised the community effort behind the scheme.
Cllr Reardon said: “This skatepark is a fantastic addition to our community. It’s wonderful to see so many people here today enjoying the space. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this dream a reality, especially the residents of East Cowes for their support and commitment.”
The project involved local company Betong Ltd and members of the East Cowes Skatepark Project Team. Crown Park, Hillcroft and numerous volunteers were also thanked for their contribution.
Cllr Reardon said the new facility would provide a safe, inclusive space for young people and families for years to come.
