The first Big Wight Beach Clean took place on Saturday, October 25, with volunteers from the Wight Dolphins joined by members of the public – and some enthusiastic dogs.
The clean-up focused on the area around Bembridge Lifeboat Station and, after just one hour, volunteers had filled multiple bin bags with discarded rubbish. Among the more unusual finds were an old canoe, a plastic owl and several abandoned lobster pots.
The event marked the launch of a wider initiative to improve the Island’s coastal environment. Wight Dolphins now plan to expand their efforts with a sea clean, aiming to remove debris not only from beaches but also from the surrounding waters. The goal is to make the coastline cleaner and safer for wildlife and visitors alike.
Organisers are inviting suggestions for future clean-up locations, and welcome anyone interested in joining the next event. For more information or to get involved email training@wightdolphins.com.
