Dave will keep busy after 42 years at Yarmouth Harbour

The maintenance manager of Yarmouth Harbour retired on Friday after 42 years with the company.

Dave Rice, of Freshwater Bay, 60, joined the Harbour in 1981 after general maintenance jobs at Alum Bay and the Totland Country Club. He said: “The first job I did at the Harbour was helping to build the link-span where the ferry comes into the town. The job has been good to me over the years.

“In my younger days I played football and cricket and it gave me the freedom to continue with sport as I had weekends off.

“The Harbour’s changed a lot over the years. It’s very much a business now, whereas before it played a much bigger part in the community.”

Despite now having time to put his feet up, Dave added: “I’m not planning to do too much for the first year, but I’ll be keeping myself busy with some jobs and I intend to go round to do odd jobs for people; I’m not really one for sitting around at home watching television!”

His colleague, Michael Bryant, will be stepping into Dave’s role.
