Cowes Primary doesn’t miss a beat in celebrating global cultures

Year 6 Djembe drumming

Pupils at Cowes Primary School have been drumming up excitement as part of an immersive musical workshop celebrating global cultures.

The children got hands-on experience with traditional Djembe drums from Africa and Dhol drums from India, experimenting with beats and rhythms from these vibrant musical traditions.

The workshops proved to be both entertaining and educational. One pupil described the sessions as “loud but so much fun”, while another was inspired by being “challenged to do strange and creative rhythms”. With around 25 per cent of pupils at the school coming from different countries, the sessions provided a unique opportunity to connect with diverse cultural backgrounds through music.

Headteacher Stephanie Praetig, noted that the experience not only showcased the richness of musical traditions but also encouraged creativity and inclusivity within the school community. “It’s a fantastic way for the children to learn about different cultures while having a blast,” she said.

It’s safe to say the children left the workshops with more than just happy memories – they’ve gained a deeper appreciation for the rhythm of the world.
