Newport Carnival will be celebrating its centenary this year and organisers, Newport Carnival and Community Events Association, want to make it a very special celebration for the 100-year milestone.

After being cancelled due to the pandemic for the last two years, the small committee has struggled to raise money through their fund-raising efforts. Wanting to make this year’s carnival as spectacular as possible, vice chairman, Paddy McHugh, decided to approach Cherry Godfrey, a new finance company on Newport’s High Street, for sponsorship.

They responded with a generous donation of ÂŁ1,000.

Andrew Taspell, managing director of Cherry Godfrey, said: “We are proudly sponsoring The Newport Carnival to support the special 100th-year celebration. It’s our way of contributing to the local community and helping spirits stay high!

“Our ÂŁ1,000 donation will help to go towards funding the fun-filled event this year and hopefully help bring joy to others.”

Paddy said he was personally humbled by their generosity and kindness, and explained that the sponsorship has made a huge impact on what the committee will now be able to do for this special celebration. He said: “I wanted to say a massive thank you to Cherry Godfrey for all their support for the carnival. I cannot stress enough how much of a difference this money will make for us as we return in 2022.

“Thank you so much.”

Newport Carnival’s main procession will be on Saturday, July 23, with the illuminated carnival on Thursday, July 25.
