More than 70 rowers took to the water for Bembridge Gig Fest last weekend (June 14-15) with strong winds and choppy seas providing a tough test of skill and endurance.
The two-day event – the Island’s only traditional fixed-seat rowing festival – was organised by Bembridge Harbour Authority and Yarmouth Gig Rowing Club. Boats from clubs across the south coast took part, including Eastney Cruising Association, Brading Haven, Langstone Pilot Gig Club, Tudor Sailing Club, and Affinity Rowing Club.
Yarmouth chairman, Keith Campbell, said: “The winds reached Force 5 at times, but the rowers rose to the challenge and posted some of the fastest times we’ve seen.” Fiona Thorpe, of Bembridge Harbour Authority, added: “It was a wonderful weekend of racing and socialising, and we were proud to support such a growing sport.”
Saturday’s races were held over a 2km (1 1/4 miles) straight-line course between Seagrove Bay and St Helens Beach, with three race categories. Winners were: Mixed: 1 Cockleshell (Eastney), 2 Spirit (Yarmouth), 3 Sir Alec Rose (Eastney). Women: 1 Star of Northney (Langstone), =2 Spirit (Yarmouth) and Cockleshell (Eastney).
