A woman diagnosed with cancer, who has grown her hair for the last 29 years, has had her locks cut off to raise more than £3,000 for the IW branch of the Wessex Cancer Trust.
Carly Sanders, 40, from Whippingham, had her head shaved at the fundraiser at The Castle Inn, Newport, last Thursday. She said: “I’ve recently been diagnosed with a colorectal cancer. Whilst hopefully treatable, I will be undergoing intensive chemotherapy and am likely to lose my hair. I made the decision to have it shaved before this happens. I have been growing my hair for the last 29 years with the occasional trim and it was 32 inches long.
“It was an overwhelming evening and absolutely amazing; I had so much support in the pub. I still pass on looking in the mirror because I don’t think I look like myself!

“It’s a really strange feeling. If I go out, I have various wigs and I’m able to cover my head up.”
Carly, who owns Short Bark and Sides IW mobile dog grooming, has a 21-year-old daughter, Jasmine, and thanked The Castle owners Simon Cant and Liam White. She added: “I’ve known Simon for years and they have been brilliant to me. It’s my must-go to place when I’m out.”
Carly’s hair was shaved by Lauren Hicks of Allsorts Hair and Beauty, Newport. Her fundraising page is justgiving.com/fundraising/carly-sanders81
