Wightlink’s 2020 calendar featuring scenic views of the Solent and the company’s fleet has raised £730 for Cancer Research UK.
All the photographs were taken by staff members who captured images from the company’s three cross-Solent routes.
The striking cover photo of former Wightlink ferry St Cecilia (now retired to Italy) being dwarfed by the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth was taken by Wightlink café steward Ben Rue, who was invited to choose the charity to receive the proceeds from the 2020 calendar.
“It is a charity close to my heart. Unfortunately, almost everyone knows someone affected by cancer and Cancer Research UK is undertaking vital research which is helping more people to survive it,” says Ben.
“I was really pleased to see my photograph featured on the cover – along with several more of my pictures inside. Our work means we are out in all weathers, at all times of day which puts us in a great position to capture some amazing shots.”
Paula Snook, Manager of Ryde’s Cancer Research UK shop says: “We were really touched that Ben chose Cancer Research UK to benefit from sales of the calendar. It contains some stunning photographs which really capture the beauty of the Solent and Ben’s photography skills shine through.
“We are very grateful to Wightlink for the support – every penny raised through their calendar will go towards vital research into cancer, work which is saving lives as more people than ever are now surviving the disease.”
More than 100 images were submitted by Wightlink staff, giving the judging panel led by Chief Executive Keith Greenfield a difficult job to choose just 13 for the calendar.
“Our colleagues have once again captured some stunning images which show the beauty of the waters in which our ships sail. The calendars have proved popular with customers and we would like to thank everyone who purchased one, all proceeds have gone to a great cause,” says Keith.
A limited number of calendars are still available at the Cancer Research UK shop in Union Street, Ryde in exchange for a donation to the charity.
