Ewan and Allan Cook travelled to the mainland at the weekend to compete in the opening round of the Gorrick Brass Monkey XC Endurance Series, at Minley Manor, Hampshire.
The course was fast and twisty, with slippery roots and mud following recent rainfall.
Ewan, racing in his first senior event since stepping up from junior level, competed in the two-hour 18–34 category. He made a strong start and settled in with the leaders, putting in consistent lap times that put him in contention for second place. Although the fast pace eventually took its toll, he pushed on to secure a well-deserved third.
Ewan said: “It was so good to be racing in with the big boys, but I just didn’t have the endurance on the day. Having said that, I’m really happy to take a podium in my first race as a senior.”
Allan competed in the three-hour 50–60 category and produced a determined ride, battling for a top-ten finish. He was just edged out on the final lap, and crossed the line in 11th place.
