Afternoon story time

Ron Mullen from HIOWAA receiving cheque from Pam Elvy

Home-owners at Silver Sands Court, in Bembridge, found a novel way of raising funds for the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Service (HIOWAA) – they simply got together one afternoon and told stories.

The concept, dreamt up by resident, Jackie Follett, was to take a subject from a list of 200 subjects or scenarios that anyone could relate to and then to talk about it. First up was: ‘Have you ever been in an earthquake?’ It’s surprising how many people have.

However simple the subject, there is always an interesting story from someone. And many surprises from some of the quietest attendees. From fishing accidents to the experience of working in a prison, everyone had a wealth of stories – funny, tragic or poignant.

All who took part made a donation, with others who couldn’t be there contributing too. The group at the McCarthy Stone development raised £230 for the service whose each flight costs around £4,000.
