A Freshwater plumber narrowly lost out on his head-to-head challenge in Ken Bruce’s Popmaster on Greatest Hits Radio on Wednesday.

Adrian Crilly scored a commendable 24 points, but was pipped by Andrew Alburn, of Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex, who picked up 27 points.

It was the second appearance on the show for Adrian, a Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC and Wet Leg fan. He previously appeared in 2013 winning his head-to-head with 27 points, but missed out on an extra prize for failing to guess three songs of a named group in 10 seconds.

Adrian said: “I usually get around 27 points but after making a good start, I suffered a bit of a mental block and couldn’t think of any answers for a couple of questions. It’s a shame because I got 33 points on my opponent’s questions.”

The three-in-10 round was based on the Girls Aloud group, which also beat his opponent, with Adrian saying: “I would have got two of them; I’m not too sure about the third!

“I will try again, but I have to wait another year before applying to have another go. I have also been trying to get on the television version of Popmaster, without success, so far.”
