An abandoned dog is slowly learning to trust again, after being found tightly tied to a tree, near Ventnor, on Easter Sunday.

The Old English Bulldog, now named Rocky, was discovered on April 5 by local resident Linda Garforth. He had been left in dense undergrowth near the bottom of East Dene, with no identification tag, and was later taken to the RSPCA Rescue Centre at Godshill for care.

Early enquiries suggest Rocky had been passed between several people before being abandoned, having been advertised on social media as “free to a good home”. His most recent keeper allegedly left him in the woods rather than seeking help from an animal welfare charity.

RSPCA manager, Steve Backhouse, confirmed the case is being treated as abandonment, which is a crime, and details have been passed to the police. He said it was “very sad” that some owners feel forced to leave animals in this way, adding: “It happens more often than people realise, and there is usually a sad story behind it. We have several dogs in our care who have suffered cruelty, neglect, or abandonment, and they need time, patience, and love, before they can be re-homed.

“Rocky was understandably nervous at first and we need to build trust with him. He needs time to adjust to new people and circumstances. We are giving him care assessments before finding him a home with somebody who can give him the security and love he needs. It will need to be somebody special.”

He added that although the charity’s funds are not unlimited, anyone struggling to care for a pet should reach out: “We will always help – whether that’s food, advice, or support.”

Rocky’s case prompted a wave of anger on-line, with many Islanders expressing disbelief that he was left tied to a tree. Animal welfare groups are reminding owners that confidential, non‑judgemental help is available from organisations such as Friends of the Animals and the RSPCA Isle of Wight.

Anyone who believes they can offer Rocky – or any animal listed on the RSPCA website – the love and stability they need is encouraged to get in touch.
