‘We will treasure the memories’: West Wight Rector says goodbye

The Team Rector for the West Wight, a classical soprano who has performed across the Island, is retiring to the mainland with her husband, David.

The Rev Jackie Maw, who came to the Island from Aldershot around six years ago, has been in charge of nine parishes and celebrates her final service at St Mary’s, Brighstone, on Sunday.

Looking back on her time here, she said: “There is a timelessness about the Island. I sensed it as we arrived nearly six years ago, but now I am retiring from full-time ministry and returning to the mainland with David.

“We have loved living here. We have run on the hills, cycled the lanes, and I have braved the waves. Our dogs have loved the beach. All part of the simple joys of living and working here.

“As a keen photographer, David has found endless inspiration in the landscape, capturing the changing moods and seasons on the Island.

“Music and singing has also played a significant role – the regular concerts organised by West Wight Arts, as well as the gathering at the Three Bishops, and dancing the night away with the Bohemians.

“I have been able to give occasional concerts, performing with James Longford, in Newport Minister, and more recently at Mountbatten, accompanied by Francis Griffiths, as part of their regular monthly fund-raising events.

“But it is the people and the memories that we have made together that David and I will treasure the most. Far too many people to mention.

“As we step onto the ferry, waving our goodbyes, we will treasure the memories of our life on the Island, grateful for the time we have shared together.”

Rev Mark Pullinger will take up the new role as Team Vicar with oversight for the West Wight Benefice churches from January.
