Newport’s Day of Christmas festivities enjoyed by all

Live music and entertainment were the order of a fun-filled afternoon as a Day of Christmas was held in Newport on Saturday. The free event, which was cancelled last year because of the weather, was organised by Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council, and included an indoor ice rink at Town Lane’s Parish Centre.

Entertainment included Huxley the Magician, Vectis Brass Band, The Starlight Academy and singer, Emilia. There was an indoor market at The Minster, with a live performance from the choir, and walkabout entertainment from Enchanted Isle, living statues, and David Randini. The day also marks the switch on of Newport’s Christmas lights.

Assistant parish clerk, Laura Jones, who helped organise the event, said: “Everything went according to plan and there was a huge turnout from start to finish. We’ve held it for around 12 years, although last year was a washout.

“Because of the weather, we decided to hold the ice rink inside this year, and it was a huge success. We constantly update and change things each year, because we have new businesses in the town, so there’s always something different – and it gives a big boost to the town shops.”
