Island fire crews were called out to a fire in an ice cream parlour on Sandown Pier in the early hours of Tuesday morning (23rd February)

Crews from Sandown, Shanklin, Ryde and Ventnor responded after smoke was spotted coming from the ground floor of the shop just after 4am. A total of 10 breathing apparatus, three hose reels, a covering jet and thermal imaging camera were used to contain and extinguish the fire over the following two hours.

Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team was also called out to provide support and stop the public getting too close to the pier from the beach with the approaching area cordoned off.
Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Steve Apter, said: “Good stop by firefighters this morning at Sandown Pier. An historic building and the type that are challenging to deal with. Well done team – thanks.”
