Brighstone & District Horticultural Society summer show attracts 600 entries

Floral arrangement in a sundae dish

James Kingswell stole the Brighstone & District Horticultural Society (BDHS) summer show, with a clean sweep of cups in the vegetable section, along with the Waytescourt Cup for Most points in Show, and the RHS Banksian Medal for Most points in Horticultural Classes.

A late surge of entries, despite the challenging spring and early summer conditions, vindicated the organisers’ decision to hire a marquee to supplement the space available for entries in the Wilberforce Hall and Scout Hut.

Judges were impressed by the quality and quantity of entries and, for the fifth successive BDHS show, the winner of Best in Show was a handicraft entry, an exquisite double-sided quilt made by Cathy Beach.

The Society Challenge classes were well supported, with 19 entrants willing to share their very varied results of Growing a pot dahlia from Seed, and 17 beautiful entries for a floral arrangement in a sundae dish.

A spokesman said: “Thanks to those who made show such a success. All told, we received nearly 600 entries, which is 50 per cent up on last year’s summer show; it was just as well we hired the marquee.”
