Appeal for past members ahead of fiftieth reunion

Founder members of 1st Newport Girls' Brigade attending their Enrolment Service

The 1st Newport Girls’ Brigade, based at Castlehold Baptist Church since 1975, is preparing to celebrate its 50th Anniversary on November 15 and 16.

The company is appealing for former members, officers and helpers to get in touch, along with anyone connected with Girls’ Brigade groups across the Island. Organisers hope to share details of a special anniversary weekend marking half a century of the Newport group.

Plans include displays of photographs and memorabilia at the church, as well as a Celebration and Rededication Service. Past members are invited to an afternoon event on Saturday, November 15 at Castlehold Baptist Church, where light refreshments will be served and memories of Girls’ Brigade life can be shared.

Joint team leader, Vanessa Squibb, a founder member, said: “Being a founder member myself, I am very excited that we are celebrating our 50th Anniversary – where has the time gone? On this anniversary weekend, I’m especially looking forward to catching up with familiar faces and hearing how the Girls’ Brigade may have had an impact on their lives over the years. It’s a real privilege for Hannah and I to be leading 1st Newport Girls’ Brigade, as we look ahead to our next chapter — and the next anniversary!”
Fellow joint team leader, Hannah Brailsford, added: “Celebrating this anniversary is really special, although I was not involved here in the early days, (I’m too young!) I joined as soon as I was old enough in 2002. Over the years, I’ve made incredible memories, built lasting friendships, and learned so many valuable skills.”
