Wildlife trust calls for citizen scientists

Islanders are being invited to join Hampshire & IW Wildlife Trust’s citizen science project, which runs until the end of June.

The initiative encourages residents, schools and community groups to record local wildlife sightings using a simple mobile survey tool.

Taking part will help build a clearer picture of biodiversity across the Isle of Wight and Hampshire, while also connecting more deeply with nature.

Dawn O’Malley, from the Trust, said: “Whether you’re an experienced wildlife spotter or new to nature recording, this project is a great way to get involved in local conservation.

“Every record contributes to our understanding of the wildlife we share our environment with.”

Sightings can be submitted via the free Survey123 mobile app, with support available through a downloadable wildlife recording toolkit.

The toolkit includes spotter sheets, notebook templates, safety guidance and outdoor learning ideas, and the project also promotes themed challenges to keep participants engaged.

At the end of the campaign, the Trust will publish an interactive map and summary report of all sightings, with certificates awarded to schools and groups who take part.
