Isle of Wight Search and Rescue (WightSAR) has received a financial boost from the recent Isle of Wight Book Awards.
The charity, which helps Hampshire & Isle of Wight Police locate vulnerable missing persons, was the chosen beneficiary at this year’s awards luncheon.
The event, which brought together authors and guests, kicked off with a presentation by Jenny Johnston, unit secretary for WightSAR. She highlighted the vital work and sophisticated equipment used by the volunteer organisation.
Expressing his gratitude, Dean Terrett, founder and chairman of WightSAR, said: “We are delighted to receive this very generous donation from the Isle of Wight Book Awards. We are a small local charity, and donations such as this make a massive difference to our organisation, we will be sure to put this money to good use.
“We would like to thank everyone who generously donated and to the team behind the book awards for choosing to support WightSAR.”
Paul Armfield of Medina Bookshop, organiser of the Book Awards, remarked: “Jennifer gave such an inspiring presentation, I think everyone in the room was completely impressed to see the work they do and just how skilled and dedicated their team are; they really are unsung heroes, fully deserving of the money raised.”
The audience purchased raffle tickets to win prizes donated by local business and bought judges’ copies of competing books, raising a total of £630 for the charity.
