Utilita does its part for IW community

Women On the Wight’s (WOW!) Knit and Natter Group

Community use of the Utilita Energy Hub in Newport has reached record levels, with increasing numbers of Island groups taking advantage of its free-to-hire warm space and complimentary refreshments.

This week alone, Hub supervisor Simon Jackson and his team have welcomed Isle of Wight SENDIASS, the Lotus women’s welfare and social group, and the Island’s u3a.

Simon said: “Our community room is buzzing with activity and we’re also looking forward to hosting an NHS mental health group next week. They’ve asked us to run one of our energy efficiency workshops for their members.”

The workshops are designed to raise awareness and understanding of energy use, and to offer practical advice on how to reduce waste and improve efficiency. They can be tailored to suit homes, workplaces, charities and community groups.

“We offer interactive sessions and personalised advice,” said Simon. “It’s all about building a shared understanding of energy efficiency – which is good for the planet and your pocket.”

Last week the Hub hosted a clothing pop-up shop as part of Clothing Poverty Awareness Week, which raised more than £200 (including Gift Aid) for the Sharewear Clothing Scheme and doubled the usual daily footfall.

The Utilita Energy Hub is based at 121 High Street, Newport, and is open Monday to Saturday.

Local community groups interested in booking the free space can email isleofwight@utilita.co.uk. More information is available at utilita.co.uk/energy-hub.
