Dear Editor,
In the somewhat febrile atmosphere of the US elections, and the coronation of the latest incumbent as leader of the Tory party, the word immigrant is being tossed around as one of the worst possible insults.
But let’s stop for a minute to consider what migrants bring to this country.
Late last Friday night, a member of my family had to be treated at the Urgent Treatment Centre at St Mary’s Hospital for a minor but painful injury.
We were first seen by a man of south Asian origin on the desk, then by two nurses (one male and one a woman, called Lady, who were Filipino I would guess) and finally by two Afro-Caribbean doctors (Dr Chuks being one of them).
What they all had in common was an amazingly kind and patient nature, dealing with their patients with smiles on their faces and showing the greatest care.
Many of us know what an emergency department can look like late at night, but nothing seemed to faze them.
I know people will say, “It’s not them, it’s the others,” but who are the others?
My thanks go out to all of them and, if this be the face of immigration, then bring it on I say.
