Kennels to double as demand rises on Island

The RSPCA Isle of Wight is expanding its boarding facilities with the addition of 12 new kennels, following a sharp rise in demand from pet owners across the Island.

The charity runs Bohemia Boarding, a commercial boarding service, based at the RSPCA Animal Centre between Rookley and Godshill. The centre currently cares for up to 12 dogs and 30 cats while their owners are away, but kennels have been fully booked throughout much of the autumn. The expansion will also create two new jobs at the site.

Branch director, Steve Backhouse, said the increased demand had been noticeable for some time. “With other boarding facilities on the Island closing, many customers have been looking for somewhere they can trust to look after their pets while they are away. These extra kennels will be a real bonus for anyone struggling to find boarding space,” he said.

Although Bohemia Boarding operates commercially, all profits go to the RSPCA’s animal welfare work on the Island. The Island branch is an independent charity affiliated to the national organisation and must raise £750,000 each year to keep its centre running. Less than ten per cent of that income comes from the national charity, meaning local fund-raising, charity shops, and income from Bohemia Boarding are essential to maintaining its services.

Steve encouraged owners to reserve spaces early, with the centre having already attracted interest from pet owners planning winter and spring breaks.
