The annual steam fair returns to the Isle of Wight Railway this Bank Holiday weekend, for its 50th showing. The four-day event, at Havenstreet, promises to be bigger and better than ever, with new attractions and returning favourites.
Hundreds of steam engines, historic vehicles, motorcycles, tractors and military exhibits will gather at Havenstreet, arriving under their own steam or by low-loader. Highlights include James and Anthony Horton’s ‘Galloping Horses’ carousel, and Alan Blyth’s swing-boats, offering children a taste of vintage fairground fun. Mike Venn’s miniature Burrell traction engine travels from Yorkshire, while Imperial College students will drive their 109-year-old Dennis fire engine from London to Portsmouth.
Some engines even cross the Solent in steam, including Dave Loader’s Garrett agricultural engine, from Bournemouth, and Malcolm Rogers’ Sentinel Steam Wagon, from Edenbridge.
The 50th anniversary will also feature the ever-popular silly traction-engine games, and a real ale bar, curated by Derek Bishop, who has supported every Steam Show since its inception. He said: “With so many beers and ciders on offer, it’s a real challenge to sample them all!” We feel for you Derek.
Steam trains will run frequently between Wootton and Smallbrook Junction via Havenstreet, connecting with Island Line and Southern Vectis services from 10am to 6pm daily. You can purchase tickets at the gate or in advance via iw.observer/steam-fair.
