Having lost his grandma, Ann Wallace, 15 years ago, Ben Snow has been looking for a way to commemorate her life by raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Ben previously played for Newport FC and Cowes FC, before moving to the mainland three years ago. With work commitments restricting his football aspirations, he has kept fit with a combination of gym work and jogging – long-distance running being a family tradition.
Having survived the brutal 33-mile Lulworth Cove off-road Ultra marathon, in awful conditions last February, Ben had the idea of setting himself a steeper challenge to raise money.
On a sunny August day, the 21-year-old set off with his dad, Kieron, from Egypt Point, Cowes, at 5am, aiming to circumnavigate the Island following the coastal path route where possible. Friends and family accompanied him on individual sections of the route. Taking regular breaks for refuelling, Ben completed the 69-mile undulating course back at Egypt Point in just under 12 hours of moving time. After running 106,253 steps, Ben found a last burst of energy for a sprint finish.
Ben’s sponsorship fund is currently edging towards the £5,000 mark, with the help of two unknown fishermen at the finish line who contributed £20 to the cause.
