Cowes RNLI Deputy Launching Authority, Sandy Steen handed in his pager and key last night (Friday). Sandy has been with the lifeboat for six years after retiring from business on the mainland and returning to the Island.
Sandy has been an important part of the management team which brought the new RNLI station (founded in 2008) up to full operational integration within the RNLI methods of training and launching for rescues.
Sandy is no stranger to the waters around the island as he grew up in Gurnard and his father was a Trinity House Pilot.
The Station Crew presented Sandy with a framed Nick Edwards photograph of Sheena Louise with the Round the Island boats in the background. A race Sandy is familiar with as a sailor and having a home overlooking the harbour.
His, quiet, calm, professional manner will be remembered with fondness by the crew.
