Rugby Game played in honour of the legendary Martin “PIN” Poynter

The family and friends of a much-loved Isle of Wight firefighter staged a rugby match in his honour on Saturday (December 22).
Martin Poynter was a well-known firefighter and rugby player, who tragically died after a stroke in 2015, aged just 49-years-old.

The inaugural Martin Poynter Cup charity match, which began with a minute’s applause, was played between a Ventnor team and an Emergency Services team at Watcombe Bottom. It was watched by a healthy crowd of three hundred and raised over £2,000 for charity. The final score was 42–17 in Ventnor’s favour. The match is to become an annual event.

The Martin Poynter Cup was handed to the winning team by Martin’s wife Helen, and their son Max led the emergency service’s team onto the pitch.
The celebration of Martin’s life continued well into the night.
