An 11-year-old boy has spent his own birthday money on donations to a local foodbank.

Alex King celebrated his birthday on September 1, just two days later he decided to spend some of his birthday cash on food supplies for the Trussell Trust’s Isle of Wight Foodbank.

The random act of kindness came as his mum, Lucie McMahon was queuing to pay for a few bits at Cowes Aldi when she remembered she had forgotten something and asked son Alex from Cowes to retrieve the items.

Alex, who attends Lane End Primary School, replied: “That’s alright mum, I’ll pay for it, because I want to get some bits for the food bank as well.”

Miss McMahon said: “He understands what it’s for and what they do, but it’s the first time he’s ever done anything like it.”

A spokesman for the Isle of Wight Foodbank said: “We’d like to extend a huge thank you to Alex, who used some of his own birthday money to buy food for the IoW Foodbank.

“How wonderful it is to see such kindness from our local young people. You’re a superstar! Thank you.”

Asda Newport have heard about Alex’s kind gesture and have donated him a £15 voucher.
