See pictures from a hit and run that closed a road and hospitalised a driver.

Pictures have emerged from a crash in Newport Road, Lake, at around 6pm on Thursday (July 26) that involved a Nissan Micra and a Nissan Almera.

The Almera “failed to stop” and drove away from the scene outside Sandown Airport, say police.

The driver of the Micra, 33-year-old Claire Woodward, was seriously injured and taken to hospital.

Miss Woodward said: “It all happened so quickly. Travelling at 40mph, the other driver suddenly pulled off the road and made a U-turn in front of me.

“We were travelling at 40mph and I was around six car lengths behind him having dropped back anyway as he was driving erratically.

“He pulled in to the lay-by and then immediately out again in front of me.

“I had no chance of stopping.

“It hammers home the huge importance of wearing your seat-belt. It saved my life. I’ve been very lucky considering the impact.

“My injuries are horrible, but it could have been so much worse. The police and ambulance service were fantastic, as are the staff at hospital now taking care of me.

“Thank you so much to all who stopped and helped me and called the emergency services.”

The travel agent is still recovering St Mary’s Hospital and has no idea when she will be released.

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said: “We were called shortly before 6pm to reports of a two vehicle collision on Newport Road, Sandown, yesterday (July 26).

“Collision involved a Nissan Micra and a Nissan Almera.

“The Almera failed to stop at the scene.

“The driver of the Micra, a 33-year-old woman from Shanklin, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

“A 35-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving offences and remains in custody at this time.”
